The Art Deco Festival Weekend in Miami is one of the most iconic events of the year celebrating the city's famous Art Deco district in South Beach. It began in 1976 by the Miami Design and Preservation League, a non-profit organization which aims to preserve, protect and promote the cultural, social, economic, environmental and architectural integrity of the Architectural Historic District of Miami Beach and other historic places in Miami Beach. Through this event, the society hoped to attract more visitors and tourists to the Miami area and to raise awareness and display the culture of all things Art Deco and the Art Deco era which ran approximately from 1925 to 1945.
The Art Deco Festival Weekend takes place in the middle of January of every year and attracts close to 300,000 visitors. It includes a number of events and activities all weekend long that are sure to please. One of the prime events of the festival is the furniture exhibit and sale which features tons of Art Deco home furnishings, accessories and lighting. Thousands of festival goers every year purchase unique and fabulous pieces for their homes and offices.
The Art Deco Festival Weekend also features a film series in collaboration with the Miami Beach Cinematheque. Various Miami Noir films are shown from the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s. The film screenings take place at the Historic City Hall on Washington Avenue. Those who want to go back in time can also visit the Classic Cars display which has many cars, motorcycles and trucks from the early 20th Century until 1986.
Those who want to learn all there is to know about the development of the Art Deco movement in Miami can attend one or many of the lectures and talks in the Art Deco Festival Weekend's lecture series, featuring many experts in the field and a variety of topics. All the events are free and take place at the Wolfsonian-FIU Museum on Washington Avenue.
Those interested in design and fashion should check out the Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show in collaboration with the Miami International University of Art & Design. The show displays many fashions which are inspired by the lines and patterns of the Miami Beach's Art Deco style.
Another way to enjoy the Art Deco design and artwork is by visiting the Poster Exhibit which has on display many posters collected throughout the world. The posters feature the history and memories of the Art Deco weekend festival through time in its 35 years of existence.
Food lovers will also enjoy trying the many delicious cuisines and dishes that there are available at the festival. Many of the restaurants on Ocean Drive participate in the festival and offer meals on the go that visitors can take away and eat while they appreciate the wide variety of activities the Art Deco Festival has to offer.
