The Miami Summer Shorts Festival consists of a collection of short theatrical plays and monologues that last approximately only from 5 to 20 minutes in length for each of one-act performances which are sure to entice theater-lovers. It takes place every year in June at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami Dade County, which is the main and state of the art performing arts venue for the Florida Grand Opera, the Miami City Ballet, and New World Symphony. The Miami Summer Shorts Festival in Miami also takes place in collaboration with City Theatre.

The Miami Summer Shorts Festival, which has come to be known as "America's Short Play Festival" has become one of the most iconic and prominent artistic theater events in South Florida. It has also gained nationwide recognition and has partnered up with the most prestigious theatre festival in the country, the Actor's Theatre of Louisville.

The Miami Summer Shorts Festival draws in many prominent traveling artists and celebrities to Miami to perform in small bite-sized plays. It is not unlikely to find Emmy and/or Grammy-winning or nominated singers, actors and performers directing or starring in plays at the Miami Summer Shorts Festival.

The Miami Summer Shorts Festival has been going strong in Miami since 1996 and the summertime theater event has become extremely popular with Miamians through the years, drawing in an increasing amount of people from year to year. The festival has also won a prestigious Carbonell Award. The many performances feature everything from acting, singing and dancing and touch on a wide variety of genres and go from the comedic to the dramatic depending on the act.

For almost a month, the Miami Summer Shorts Festival has something for everyone and is sure to please both locals and tourists. The short-form theater means that people won't have any difficulty fitting in a few plays in between sunbathing on the beach, strolling along Lincoln Road or hitting the hip clubs of South Beach.

Miami Summer Shorts Festival

The Miami Summer Shorts Festival is broken down into three separate productions each with its own series of one-act short plays. The main program is the "Signature Shorts" series which first helped put the festival on the map. It features a large number of bite-sized hilarious one act comedies and heartfelt dramas throughout the festival.
The second program "Shorts 4 Kids" is directed towards kids. Since many of the theatrical shorts feature racy adult-themes and raunchy humor, the festival organizers decided to introduce a program tailored especially for kids with hilarious plays and fun music, dancing and songs. Since the one-act plays are so short, this is the perfect opportunity for parents to introduce their children to the theater.

The third program "Undershorts" is reserved especially for adults and contains mature and provocative adult themes. The plays feature edgy political and social material but also racy language, behavior and even some nudity which is not appropriate for those under 17.
Those who want to attend the Miami Summer Shorts Festival can buy tickets directly from the box office of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Biscayne Boulevard, at the ticket office of the City Theatre located on Brickell Avenue or they can get tickets online.
